Groundwater – 50 year of development

Throughout humankind’s development history, groundwater has been the precious natural resources for socio-economic development and human life. According to the study by UNEP (2003), there are about 2 million people using groundwater for daily domestic demands and over 50 per cent of global population use groundwater for eating and drinking.

Vietnam is one of the countries where groundwater has been the main water supply for a long time with increasing pumping volumes. Most of the provinces in the country are using groundwater for domestic production. Among them, Ha Noi, Ha Tay, Hung Yen, Vinh Phuc nearly use 100 per cent of groundwater for daily activities. Total discharge of groundwater pumping today in Vietnam has reached 5 million m3/day and will continue to increase to meet the rising demands due to urbanization and socio-economic development. The over-pumping with limited insights into groundwater systems, inappropriate planning of wells, weak protection and management policies are of critical concerns as they could result in severe environmental impacts, apprehensive water security and delayed socio-economic activities in many localities throughout the country. There are numerous evolving challenges for sustaining sufficient groundwater supplies for Vietnam.

In line with global water industry trends, local water strategic agenda and responding to the call of World Water Forum (WWF) 2017 for “implementation”, and celebrate 50 year Anniversary of Vietnam Hydrogeology, The Vietnam Association of Hydrogeology, National Center for Water Res. Investigation and Planning, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology and other partners will organizing International Conference on “Development and Protection of Groundwater”  featuring the following themes, but not limited to:

  • Groundwater resources with climate change and sea level rise;
  • Groundwater resources in economic development;
  • Sustainable management and exploitation of groundwater resources;
  • Groundwater resources development;
  • Saltwater intrusion and artificial recharge;
