National Seminar on Erosion

The seminal was held on Hoi An on May 25-26, 2017, sponsored by L’Agence Française de Développement – AFD,  The Delegation of the European Union to Viet Nam (EU), The Southern Institute of Water Resource Research (SIWRR), and Central Region Economics of Technology and Water Resources (CKT). The participants come from France, EU, Office of the Government, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Science and Technology, officials from Quang Nam, Ca Mau, Tien Giang, Da Nang, as well as international organizations such as GIZ, AUSAID, KOIKA, KFW, WB, JICA, French Embassy, Dutch Embassy.

In the seminar, Prof. Nguyen Kim Dan ( Saint-Vennat Hydraulics Laboratory, France), Hoi An project Coordinator, presented the main results on Hoi An project and the measures proposed to sustainable protect the Hoi An Beach from erosion. He stated that the research group carried out a significant work in almost one year, including Cua Dai topography measurement, experiment analysis, 2D, 3D wave modelling, sediment transport modelling, Cua Dai morphology modelling. The results of mathematics model and experiment analysis reveals that the main reason of Hoi An beach erosion comes from the insufficient sediment volume on Vu Gia – Thu Bon River Basin, a large amount of sediment has kept at Dak Mi 4 and Song Tranh 2 reservoir. Additionally, infrastructure and resort constructions affect the sediment flux direction, causing an unbalance sediment, consequence a severe beach erosion.

The research group proposed a sustainable approach in order to protect Hoi-An beach which is an propagation beach from Cua Dai to Boutique Hoi An Resort, with about 6500 m length. Sea propagation can be achieved by 1.5 m height submerge-dam system paralleling with the shoreline, with the distance from the shoreline about 170 – 200 m, depending on the sea depth. This submerge –dam system could reduce wave energy and erosion process
