Water, Food and Energy Nexus

Water serves a range of productive, environmental and social purposes in the agricultural sector and wider economy. Policy maker, water management officials, and consumers/users’ action mechanisms are responsible for ensuring water is allocated and used to achieve socially and economically beneficial and efficient outcomes in a manner that is environmentally effective and sustainable. However, management of water resources in agriculture sector is far more complicated due to its being severely tested with rising food and energy prices, growing competition under the pressure of different users, global population booming, and concerns related to climate change. Agriculture is a primary target for policies that move the sector towards sustainable management of water as it uses about 70% of the world’s freshwater withdrawals and over 40% of total OECD countries water withdrawals. The anticipated growth in world population from 7 billion currently to 9 billion by 2050 will drive a major expansion in demand for food and water. It is safe to say that sustainable development of water resources is an important direction of the world agriculture.

With the presence of experts Japan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippine, and Vietnam experts, this workshop is aimed to share experiences in a challenge that food production in a world of rapid growing population but limited amount of water resources supply from
